Regardless of your area of emphasis, digital media play an increasingly critical role; art studio 21 Digital Foundations is an introduction to Digital Media servicing all areas of Art Studio practice. We will engage in strategic cultural production, conceptualization/visualization, and development of projects across print, web, & multi-media. Tactical & aesthetic concerns appropriate to the design, management, & deployment of artwork will be at the core of our exploration. Digital Foundations is a lab-intensive course involving basic tutorials, problem solving, research, discussion, & continuous development of 2D, print & screen-based projects. The active participation of all students is of fundamental importance. There will be regular class discussions and group critiques. Students will become familiar with design and layout issues, basic image processing, typographic considerations, Macintosh system and software, archiving & interface-design, appropriate file formats, HTML/CSS, and basic net protocols. Students will create and manage individual print & screen-based projects. At the end of the course students will have gained experience and confidence in their ability to produce and/or support their artwork in basic digital media. Student performance will be evaluated on the basis of active participation, acquisition & development of skills, project aesthetics, research quality, and the timely and successful completion of all assignments.
