Autonomy is No Longer Possible or Interesting, Part I
Former YWCA building, Pasadena, California.
Installation: Sept 19 – Dec 31, 2009
exercise bikes, crystal, LEDs, hardware, energy
This work focuses attention on a forgotten architectural gem and former center
for the community. Four craigs-listed exercise bikes converted into power
generators are available to ride outside the shuttered YWCA building designed
by Julia Morgan near Pasadena's City Hall.
Inside, a purpose-built glass chandelier is powered by the bicycles outside,
revealing the generous proportions and symmetrical building design still
evident despite the deterioration of the structure.
Impossible to view alone, this work requires group effort to be seen.
After this exhibition, the City of Pasadena is working to take over and
restore the Julia Morgan YWCA building to its former grandeur.
